'Home Improvement' Star Zachery Ty Bryan Sentenced to 16 Months in Custody for DUI

Riverside, CA - Former "Home Improvement" actor Zachery Ty Bryan has been sentenced to 16 months in custody following a plea deal in a 2024 California DUI case, marking the latest development in a series of legal issues spanning several years.

Bryan, 44, appeared in court on February 23, 2026, where he pleaded guilty to driving under the influence and admitted to an enhancement for operating a vehicle with a blood alcohol concentration (BAC) of 0.15% or higher, nearly double California's legal limit of 0.08%. Court records also indicate he acknowledged two prior DUI convictions, which heightened the severity of the charges.
Bryan received credit for 57 days already served, meaning he is expected to serve approximately 14 months.

In Oregon, sentences exceeding 12 months are typically served in state prison under the Department of Corrections, where offenders generally must complete at least 70% - 80% of the term. In California a 14 or 16-month sentence can be served in county jail. Under California's Criminal Justice Realignment Act (Penal Code § 1170(h)), many non-serious, non-violent, and non-sex felonies allow offenders to serve their time in county jail rather than state prison.

In California, inmates sentenced to county jail for a DUI can often receive "good time/work time" credits, potentially reducing their sentence significantly, sometimes by up to 50% for good behavior and participation in programs. However, for short sentences (e.g., 30 days), early release is rarely granted.

This conviction adds to a pattern of arrests since 2020, including multiple incidents of domestic violence, assault, and DUI in various states.

Notable prior events include:

  • October 16, 2020 (Eugene, Oregon): Arrested for strangulation, fourth-degree assault, and interfering with a report in a domestic incident involving Johnnie Faye Cartwright. Pleaded guilty to misdemeanor menacing in 2021; sentenced to probation.
  • July 28, 2023 (Eugene, Oregon): Arrested for fourth-degree felony assault, third-degree robbery, and misdemeanor harassment in a domestic violence case. Pleaded guilty to felony assault constituting domestic violence in October 2023; sentenced to 36 months supervised probation, seven days jail (served), and no-contact order with Cartwright.
  • February 17, 2024 (La Quinta, California): Arrested for DUI after a traffic collision, with blood alcohol at 0.229. Charged with felony DUI (fourth lifetime offense), misdemeanor hit-and-run; prohibited from alcohol.
  • October 25, 2024 (Custer County, Oklahoma): Arrested for DUI after unauthorized travel from California; deputies noted intoxication despite consumption ban.
  • January 1, 2025 (Myrtle Beach, South Carolina): Arrested for second-degree domestic violence after allegedly assaulting and strangling Cartwright, violating no-contact and travel rules. Released on $10,000 bail.
  • November 29, 2025 (Lane County, Oregon): Arrested for probation violation after the Big Fall Creek Road incident, involving prohibited contact with Cartwright and signs of impairment.
Oregon probation officials have described Bryan's record as reflecting ongoing noncompliance with conditions designed to address substance abuse and prevent violence, despite prior completion of treatment programs.
Some details of the case, including the plea specifics and sentencing outcome, were first reported by TMZ.

Bryan appears to currently be in custody at the Riverside County Jail in California since Jan. 30, 2026

Court records show Bryan has a Mar. 2, 2026 probation hearing in Lane County Circuit Court. This date was set on Feb. 17, 2026 while Bryan was in a California jail, and before the sentencing that TMZ reported on Feb. 23, 2026.
Lane County District Attorney Christopher J. Parosa, via Deputy DA Erik T. Knapp's sworn affidavit filed December 3, 2025 cited probation officer Valerie Truelove's report in urging revocation. The motion argues Bryan failed to abstain from intoxicants, ignored geographic restrictions by departing California without permission, and breached the no-contact order, violations that "are not being served" by continued probation. Knapp, sworn before notary Mindy Lane, emphasized the need for Bryan to "appear and show cause" why his release shouldn't end, a bench warrant issued, probation revoked, and sentencing imposed.

Bryan will face out-of-state warrants once he finishes this sentence.
