EUGENE, Ore. — On April 23, 2025, Lane County Circuit Court Judge Clara Rigmaiden sentenced Matthew Allen Drake , 46, to 600 months (50 years) in prison following his conviction on multiple charges of child sexual abuse. The sentencing comes after a 16-day trial ending April 17, where a jury found Drake guilty of four counts of first-degree rape, two counts of first-degree sodomy, two counts of using a child in a display of sexually explicit conduct, two counts each of first- and second-degree encouraging child sexual abuse, and one count of tampering with physical evidence. The case involved repeated sexual assaults on a child under 16, with Drake also coercing the victim to send nude images and attempting to destroy evidence. The Lane County Sheriff’s Office began investigating after the victim’s friends encouraged the minor to report the abuse, leading to Drake’s arrest on March 23, 2023. EUGENE, Ore. — A federal judge in Oregon sentenced J.H. Baxter & Co. and its president, Georgia Baxter-Krause, on April 22, 2025, for hazardous waste and Clean Air Act violations at their Eugene wood treatment facility. The companies were fined $1.5 million and placed on five years of probation, while Baxter-Krause received a 90-day prison term and one year of supervised release. J.H. Baxter & Co. Inc. and J.H. Baxter & Co., A California Limited Partnership, pleaded guilty to illegally treating hazardous waste and violating Clean Air Act regulations by emitting hazardous pollutants. Baxter-Krause admitted to making false statements under the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA) to conceal the violations. The companies improperly treated hazardous wastewater from wood preservation by boiling it off in unpermitted retorts, releasing pollutants into the air near residential areas.   EUGENE, Ore. — On April 23, Eugene Police responded to a crisis at 98 E. 11th Avenue after reports of a 43-year-old man, who was suicidal and armed with a firearm in a bathroom.  At 8:21 a.m., police evacuated the building and deployed the SWAT team. The subject followed police instructions, exiting the building and was safely taken into custody by 9:21 a.m.  He faces charges of Disorderly Conduct. The case number is 25-6456. EUGENE, Ore. — A tragic accident occurred this morning, April 23, at approximately 9:45 a.m., when a man driving a Toyota Rav 4 northbound on the “s curves” in the 2500 block of Amazon Parkway lost control of his vehicle. The car veered over a curb, crossed a grassy area, and struck a pedestrian walking on a bark path. The vehicle then collided with a tree and rolled into the Amazon slough. EUGENE, Ore. — A 36-year-old man was arrested Monday night after a physical altercation and gunfire in an apartment parking lot on W. 11th Avenue, according to Eugene Police. At 8:22 p.m., officers responded to the 300 block of W. 11th Avenue following a report of a gunshot. Police found that Michael Allen Gutierrez had been told to leave by apartment security after a phone dispute with a female tenant over property. Gutierrez yelled at the security guard, and a 41-year-old bystander intervened, sparking a physical fight involving both the bystander and the guard. During the clash, a single shot was fired, and all involved fled the scene. With the aid of drones, K9 units, and multiple officers, police located Gutierrez several blocks away. Initially claiming he was shot, Gutierrez was found to have a non-life-threatening injury, likely from the fight.
