Springfield man arrested in fatal stabbing linked to hit-and-run

SPRINGFIELD, Ore. — A 36-year-old Springfield man has been arrested and charged with second-degree murder following a fatal stabbing Friday afternoon in the 2800 block of Gateway Street, police said.

Springfield Police Department officers responded about 2 p.m. Aug. 7 to a report of a stabbing that had just occurred in front of a business. Officers rendered aid until medics arrived. The victim, whose name has not been released, was taken to a hospital with life-threatening injuries and later died.

Witnesses told investigators the suspect left the scene in a white SUV. One witness followed the vehicle and provided real-time location updates. Other Springfield officers and an Oregon State Police trooper located the suspect after he parked and was standing outside the vehicle. He was taken into custody without incident.

The suspect, identified as Edgar Solorio Lopez, was driving a white 2011 Nissan Murano that showed body damage consistent with a vehicle involved in a fatal hit-and-run in Springfield the evening of Aug. 6 (case No. 26-4942). Detectives and crash investigators responded to follow up on that investigation. Police believe the same vehicle was involved in both incidents.

Lopez faces a charge of murder in the second degree in connection with the stabbing (circuit court case # 26CR43223). He was to be lodged at the Lane County Jail. The investigation remains ongoing, with officers and detectives continuing evidence collection, witness interviews, scene processing and additional follow-up.

Springfield police have released a photograph of Lopez and are asking anyone who saw him on Aug. 6 or 7 to contact the department at (541) 726-3714. The photo is being shared solely to assist the investigation.
