Cottage Grove Woman Arrested After Firing Shots Inside Apartment

COTTAGE GROVE, Ore. — A 50-year-old Cottage Grove woman was arrested early Thursday after firing multiple rounds inside her apartment during a hours-long standoff with police, authorities said.

Carol H. LaDuke faces two counts of attempt to commit assault in the first degree, two counts of unlawful use of a weapon (both felonies), eight counts of recklessly endangering another person, and one count of second-degree disorderly conduct (all nine misdemeanors) stemming from the incident at the Riverside Apartments in the 1700 block of North Highway 99.

South Lane 9-1-1 received a report of a burglary in progress around 1:43 a.m. Nov. 5. Officers from the Cottage Grove Police Department responded and later determined the caller lived at the residence and was armed. LaDuke told dispatchers she had fired her weapon but refused to provide further details.

Upon arrival, officers heard yelling from inside the apartment. LaDuke refused to come to the door. Officers then heard a single gunshot, followed by several more shots while she continued yelling. Multiple attempts to reestablish contact met with limited success.

Lane County Sheriff’s Office deputies arrived shortly after 2 a.m. to assist, and the agency’s Special Response Team was requested. Crisis negotiators spent several hours trying to persuade LaDuke to exit the residence. She refused. The Special Response Team eventually breached the apartment and took her into custody without incident. Cottage Grove officers transported her to the Lane County Jail.

A subsequent search warrant executed at the residence recovered a 9mm handgun and several spent shell casings. Investigators determined LaDuke had fired multiple rounds into the ceiling of her first-floor apartment. The unit above was occupied at the time; those residents were uninjured and safely evacuated by officers. No injuries were reported in the incident.

Cottage Grove Police Chief Cory Chase thanked the Lane County Sheriff’s Office Patrol Division and Special Response Team for their assistance, saying their resources were instrumental in resolving the situation peacefully.

The investigation remains active. Anyone with information is asked to contact the Cottage Grove Police Department at 541-942-9145.
