EUGENE, Ore. — The University of Oregon is investigating reports of five sexual assaults that occurred on or near campus in the past week, according to a campus crime warning issued Wednesday. Four of the incidents involved university students. The fifth took place near Alton Baker Dog Park, adjacent to university property, and an arrest has been made in that case. University officials said the assaults are not believed to be related, though several alleged perpetrators may have taken advantage of victims who were intoxicated at social events. Details of the assaults are being withheld while police investigations continue by the University of Oregon Police Department and the Eugene Police Department. All affected students have been offered university support resources. Anyone with information that could assist the investigations is asked to contact UOPD at 541-346-2919. Not every death is a murder. Not every fire is arson. Not every crime is a conspiracy

Image
Curiosity is normal. When information is limited, it is reasonable to ask questions: “Was this a crime?” “Was foul play involved?” Asking is not the problem. Turning the question into a fixed conspiracy is. It is not okay to keep insisting an accidental death was murder after law enforcement has stated there is no indication of a crime. It is not okay to declare every fire arson when the evidence points elsewhere. The fire department does not have to end every non-arson report with the words “this does not appear to be arson.” Police do not have to list every injury that did not occur, “The subject was not shot, not stabbed, and showed no blunt force trauma”, simply to satisfy public speculation. Agencies are not required to detail every possibility or every fact of a case to the public. “No indication of a crime” is not an invitation for endless demands about signs that would already be obvious if they existed. Too often, armchair detectives ignore this. A death becomes automatic murd...

SPRINGFIELD, Ore. — A 36-year-old Springfield man has been arrested and charged with second-degree murder following a fatal stabbing Friday afternoon in the 2800 block of Gateway Street, police said. Springfield Police Department officers responded about 2 p.m. Aug. 7 to a report of a stabbing that had just occurred in front of a business. Officers rendered aid until medics arrived. The victim, whose name has not been released, was taken to a hospital with life-threatening injuries and later died. Witnesses told investigators the suspect left the scene in a white SUV. One witness followed the vehicle and provided real-time location updates. Other Springfield officers and an Oregon State Police trooper located the suspect after he parked and was standing outside the vehicle. He was taken into custody without incident. The suspect, identified as Edgar Solorio Lopez , was driving a white 2011 Nissan Murano that showed body damage consistent with a vehicle involved in a fatal hit-and-run i...
