Drunk Driver Sentenced in Fatal 2021 Crash


Eugene, Ore. - ALFRED CALDERA SANTOS, age 64, was convicted, and sentenced today in the death of  Zakkary McCann (29) of Mapleton.

On December 14, 2021 at approximately 7:40 AM, Oregon State Police Troopers and emergency personnel responded to a two-vehicle crash on Hwy 126W at milepost 29. 

Preliminary investigation revealed a westbound Dodge Caravan, operated by Alfred Santos (62) of Eugene, collided head-on with an eastbound Toyota Camry, operated by Zakkary McCann (29) of Mapleton. 

McCann sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced deceased. A passenger in the Toyota Camry, Kussaundra Stevenson (25) of Mapleton, received minor injuries. Santos was transported to the hospital with serious injuries. 


Santos was found guilty of:

163.145 - CRIMINALLY NEGLIGENT HOMICIDE

163.160 - ASSAULT 4TH DEG

813.010 - DRIVE UNDER INFLUENCE INTOXICANTS


Santos was sentenced to 3 years, 6 months in prison. His uncalculated end of sentence date is Christmas Day, 2027.  Being this is not a measure 11 crime, Santos will be eligible for early release, and good time reductions. As in any case, time in county lock-up will be credited to his sentence.

Three Arrested After Year-Long Noti Murder Investigation

Noti, Ore. - On November 20, 2022 a body was located in the forest by hunters. The Lane County Sheriff’s Office detectives worked diligently on finding any leads on the case. The body was later identified as 37-year-old Sean Lee Wilkins. With help from community members tips and hard work from the detectives they were able to gather probable cause on the murder suspects. Lane County Jail Inmate Death Investigation

Eugene, Ore. - On 08/24/2023 at 2:00pm, a Lane County Sheriff’s Deputy working within a housing unit at the Lane County Jail discovered a male adult-in-custody (AIC) unresponsive in his cell during hourly checks.  His last check had been completed at 1:00pm.  The male had a ligature tied around his neck and was unconscious and not breathing. The deputy removed the ligature and immediately began life-saving efforts. Emergency medical assistance arrived and despite continued life-saving efforts the male did not survive.  Detectives along with the Lane County Medical Examiner’s Office responded to the scene and began an investigation.  All indications at this point are that the male died as the result of apparent suicide.  Investigators with the Medical Examiner’s Office are continuing the investigation into the official cause of his death.  A post-mortem examination is scheduled for today.  Cates - 2021 mugshot The male is identified as 33-year-old Joshua William Cates .  Cates was conv
