EPD Busts Major Meth Haul: 73 Pounds Seized on I-5

EUGENE, Ore. — Eugene Police Department (EPD) officers, with assistance from the Oregon State Police (OSP) Drug Interdiction Team, arrested two local residents on November 11, 2025, after intercepting approximately 73 pounds of methamphetamine worth an estimated $50,000 wholesale on Interstate 5 near Cottage Grove.

Alejandra Diaz Alcantar, 45, and Juan Alberto Alvarado Gonzalez, 41, both of Eugene, were under investigation by the EPD Street Crimes Unit (SCU) for allegedly transporting 50 to 80 pounds of drugs from California. Officers learned the pair had traveled south from their residence in the 1400 block of Railroad Boulevard, with the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department confirming their presence in California based on a vehicle description.
As the suspects returned north on I-5, SCU—supported by EPD Investigations and OSP's Drug K9 Interdiction Team—stopped their vehicle. An OSP K9 alerted to the presence of drugs, prompting a search warrant. The search uncovered the massive meth stash and over $1,000 in cash inside the vehicle.
Follow-up searches at three associated residences on Railroad Boulevard revealed evidence of drug manufacturing and sales, including an additional $2,400 in cash.
The suspects were booked into Lane County Jail on charges of Unlawful Delivery of Methamphetamine and Unlawful Possession of Methamphetamine (substantial quantity). The driver, Gonzalez, also received a misdemeanor citation for Driving While Suspended.
The operation highlights SCU's partnerships to address community safety, funded in part by a voter-approved tax supporting faster responses, crime deterrence, youth outreach, investigations, and accountability for offenders.
