Burglary Crew Targets Asian Families and Businesses in Eugene
Eugene, Or. - An ongoing organized burglary crew is continuing by targeting Asian families and business owners in Eugene with recent residential burglaries focusing on homes likely to contain cash, jewelry, and valuables. Investigators believe the group is responsible for approximately seven burglaries, stealing safes after surveilling victims and breaking in while they are at work.
Jensina Hawkins with the Asian American Council of Oregon (AACO) today stated, "Asian American Council of Oregon (AACO) has become aware that certain Asian American community members have been the victims of recent burglaries. We look forward to the collaboration of local law enforcement, including the Eugene Police Department, as well as other state and local officials, to address this matter and ensure the safety of our community. AACO plans to hold another Public Safety Forum on October 23, and we encourage AAPI residents to report all crimes to local law enforcement as soon as possible. Please reach out to AACO if you would like assistance with reporting. You can email AACO here: Info@asiancouncil.org
The EPD urges residents to avoid storing large amounts of cash or valuables at home, recommending financial institutions or safety deposit boxes for secure storage and insuring expensive items. To prevent burglaries, the EPD Community Engagement Team advises locking all windows and doors, using deadbolts, installing real-time surveillance cameras, and setting timers for lights and TVs. Residents should close blinds when away, keep exterior lights on at night, and make homes appear occupied. Additional tips include arranging neighborly mutual aid, scheduling free Home Vacation Checks, or requesting a Home Safety Assessment via the EPD’s Community Engagement Team webpage.Report suspicious activity or non-emergency crimes to the EPD at 541-682-5111 or online at epd.mypdconnect.com.
