Stolen Vehicle Chase Ends in Fiery Crash in Springfield

SPRINGFIELD, Ore. - A high-speed chase involving a stolen vehicle ended in a fiery crash early Friday morning, August 29, 2025, leaving a Springfield Police Department (SPD) officer and the suspect injured. The incident began around 2:20 a.m. when an SPD officer attempted to stop a reckless driver near Beltline Road and Gateway Street. The driver, operating a vehicle reported stolen from the Salem area, fled, leading officers on a pursuit westbound on Beltline Road into Eugene.

The suspect made a U-turn west of Coburg Road, driving eastbound in the westbound lanes, and collided with the pursuing officer’s patrol car. Continuing the wrong way, the suspect evaded the officer, who then turned around to relocate the vehicle near Coburg Road. The chase resumed eastbound, with a second SPD officer joining as the suspect passed Gateway Street. The pursuit ended when the second officer used a Pursuit Intervention Technique to stop the vehicle on Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd., in front of Riverbend Hospital.
As officers attempted to arrest the suspect, the vehicle caught fire, ignited by multiple gas containers inside. Both the suspect and an SPD officer sustained burns. The suspect was taken to Riverbend Hospital’s emergency room for treatment, while the officer was treated and released. The Eugene Police Department and Eugene-Springfield Fire Department assisted at the scene.
The cause of the fire and the incident remain under investigation, and the suspect’s identity has not been released. The roadway was temporarily closed for investigators to process the scene.
