Student in Custody After Posting Photo with Gun Inside ECCO School Bathroom

EUGENE, Ore. – A student at the 4J School District's Early College & Career Options (ECCO) program was taken into custody Friday, February 21, after posting a photo on social media of themselves holding a pistol inside a school bathroom.

According to Eugene Education Options Principal Scott Mayers, the student was wearing a ski mask and pointing the firearm at the camera in the image. Another student reported the post to school officials, who immediately notified the district safety team and law enforcement. Authorities confirmed the photo was taken inside the school that day.

The student left campus shortly after taking the photo without interacting with staff or other students and is now in the custody of state authorities. Due to privacy laws, further details about the student’s identity and legal status have not been disclosed.

Mayers assured families that ECCO is taking the situation seriously, emphasizing that any student who brings a weapon to school or makes a violent threat is immediately suspended and undergoes a behavioral threat assessment. Students in such cases are not allowed to return until all safety concerns and disciplinary consequences have been addressed.

In his message to ECCO families and staff, Mayers praised students who quickly reported the concerning image. He also reminded the community of the importance of reporting safety threats, encouraging them to use the SafeOregon tip line, which allows anonymous reports at www.safeoregon.com.

Despite the seriousness of the incident, there was no immediate threat to students or staff, and the school did not need to implement emergency protocols such as a lockdown or evacuation.

“The safety and well-being of all our students will continue to be our highest priority,” Mayers said. “Thank you for your partnership in this important process.”
