Arrest Made in Deadly Amazon Path Crash



EUGENE, Ore. — On June 4, 2025, Scott Shawn Stolarczyk, 51, of Eugene, was indicted, and an arrest warrant was issued on charges of second-degree manslaughter and driving under the influence of intoxicants (DUII), a Class A misdemeanor, in Lane County Circuit Court. 

Stolarczyk was arrested and booked into the Lane County Jail today, June 5, 2025, on these charges. The indictment follows a deadly incident on April 23, 2025, when Stolarczyk’s Toyota RAV4 struck and killed Sharon Johnson Schuman, 79, of Eugene, on the Amazon bark path. Previously, on May 29, 2025, Stolarczyk had faced a single charge of second-degree manslaughter, which carries a mandatory minimum sentence of six years and three months if convicted.


According to a search warrant affidavit, Stolarczyk had a blood-alcohol content (BAC) of 0.234 nearly an hour after the crash, nearly three times Oregon’s legal limit of 0.08. A BAC of this level causes severe intoxication, impairing coordination, judgment, and cognitive function, with risks of alcohol poisoning or death. Subjects with this high of a BAC may be observed as visibly drunk, with slurred speech, stumbling, confusion, or possible unconsciousness.

The incident occurred around 9:45 a.m. on April 23, when Stolarczyk, driving northbound on the “S curves” in the 2500 block of Amazon Parkway, lost control of his vehicle. The RAV4 veered over a curb, crossed a grassy area, struck Schuman on the bark path, and then hit a tree before rolling into the Amazon slough. Schuman was pronounced dead at the scene. Stolarczyk, initially trapped, escaped through the vehicle’s back window and was hospitalized. He is now in custody at the Lane County Jail, with an arraignment scheduled for June 17, 2025 (Case No. 25CR30103). Additional charges may be filed.

Man Arrested for Abuse of Corpse After Woman’s Body Found in Cottage Grove

COTTAGE GROVE, OR – Authorities have arrested a man in connection with the discovery of a deceased woman found on the sidewalk in front of 711 Highway 99 in Cottage Grove. The body was discovered at approximately 3:50 a.m. on March 28, 2025, prompting an immediate response from Cottage Grove Police. Upon arrival, officers determined the woman was deceased. Initially, her identity was withheld pending notification of next of kin. Based on information gathered independently, it was determined that the deceased had been staying at a local motel before her body was moved. Victim and Suspect Names Released in Royal Ave. Murder Investigation

Eugene, Or. - At 3 a.m. on September 1, Eugene Police received reports of a loud dispute with shots fired outside a home near Royal Avenue and Ruskin Street. Units arrived to find a woman, Haley Leann Mackin , age 23, deceased with gunshot wounds.  Eugene Police Violent Crimes Unit identified Brandon Daniel Smith , age 24, as the suspect. Mackin and Smith had previously been in a relationship. Mackin was recently granted an order of protection against Smith.  Smith was taken into custody by EPD at 5:05 a.m. at  4th Avenue and Pearl Street . Eugene Police thanks Springfield Police and Lane County Sheriff’s Office for their assistance during the apprehension.
