Eugene Police Arrest Man After Hours-Long Standoff

EUGENE, Ore. — A tense situation unfolded on January 26 when Eugene Police responded to reports of a man throwing items, including glass, from a sixth-story window in the 1000 block of Ferry Street. The disturbance, which took place around 2:47 p.m., prompted an immediate response from local authorities.

The man, later identified as 33-year-old David Andrew Everett Abare, was reportedly throwing various objects into a parking lot commonly used by other residents of the building. Eugene Police (EPD) had responded to the location multiple times in the past. Upon arrival, EPD deployed a drone to assess the situation and observed red liquid splattered on several windows and the interior of Abare's apartment.

Officers attempted to contact Abare by phone, but their efforts were unsuccessful. The suspect had an outstanding warrant, and authorities had probable cause for his arrest. The EPD Crisis Negotiation Team (CNT) was called in to help de-escalate the situation and communicate with Abare.

As negotiations unfolded, officers heard a loud noise that sounded like a gunshot coming from within the apartment, though the source of the noise was not confirmed. In response, SWAT teams, additional drones, and a K9 unit were deployed to the scene. EPD officers evacuated other residents from the sixth floor and worked with Central Lane 911 to ensure the safety of those in the surrounding area.

SWAT took control of the situation, and CNT continued efforts to establish contact with Abare. During this time, the suspect threw furniture from the apartment window, damaging a vehicle below. With mounting concerns over the situation, an officer applied for a body warrant, which was approved.

At approximately 8:20 p.m., officers used less-lethal munitions and a K9 unit to take Abare into custody. He was evaluated on the scene by Eugene Springfield Fire and transported to a local hospital for medical clearance before being lodged at Lane County Jail.

Abare now faces charges including two counts of Criminal Mischief in the Second Degree, Disorderly Conduct, Reckless Endangering, and the outstanding warrant. The red liquid found in the apartment was determined to be ketchup. The cause of the loud noise remains unclear. UPDATE: the DA has decided to not file on the circuit court charges.

This incident, marked by hours of tension and negotiation, ended without further injury, though significant damage was caused by the thrown furniture.
