Armed Man Arrested After Blocking Highway 36 in Swisshome
SWISSHOME, Ore. — On July 14, Lane County Sheriff’s deputies and Oregon State Police Troopers responded to a disturbance at Highway 36 and Alder Street in Swisshome, where 39-year-old Nicholas Michael Reibold had blocked the highway with his vehicle and trespassed on a nearby property while armed with a knife, according to the Lane County Sheriff’s Office. Witnesses reported Reibold was also screaming at local residents.
An Oregon State Police Trooper, patrolling nearby, arrived first, but it took deputies approximately 40 minutes to reach the scene due to limited staffing and the distance from prior calls, despite responding with lights and sirens. A sergeant from the Lane County Sheriff’s Crisis Negotiation Team contacted Reibold by phone during the response. Upon arrival, deputies found Reibold wearing a tactical vest with body armor, though he had discarded the knife. Using de-escalation tactics, deputies managed the situation as Reibold continued to walk across the highway. He eventually complied and was detained without further incident.
Following an investigation, Reibold was booked into Lane County Jail on charges of second-degree trespass and second-degree disorderly conduct.
