Cottage Grove Man Arrested for Burglary Spree



COTTAGE GROVE, Ore. — A 24-year-old local man, Hal Andrew Davis, was arrested on July 5, 2025, in connection with two burglaries in Cottage Grove, police said. The incidents occurred on June 28 at a residence on E. Madison Ave. and July 3 at a business on Row River Rd.On June 28, around 3:20 a.m., Cottage Grove Police Department officers responded to a home in the 1100 block of E. Madison Ave. after reports of an unknown male entering through an unlocked door. The suspect fled, possibly scared off by the residents’ dog, but was captured on home security footage.

On July 3, at approximately 7:25 a.m., police were called to a business in the 2200 block of Row River Rd. where the front glass door had been smashed and a vehicle stolen. Security footage from the business matched the suspect from the earlier residential break-in. Later that day, police recovered the stolen vehicle and items taken from the business in the 1000 block of Geer Ave.

On July 5, officers contacted Davis at a restaurant in the 1100 block of HWY 99 following a disturbance. He was initially detained for a parole violation but was later identified as the suspect in both burglaries. Davis faces charges including second-degree burglary, first-degree theft, unauthorized use of a motor vehicle, first-degree criminal mischief, and first-degree criminal trespass.

Police Chief Cory Chase credited the quick resolution to the victims’ cooperation and security systems. The investigation remains ongoing, with no further details released.

Man Arrested for Abuse of Corpse After Woman’s Body Found in Cottage Grove

COTTAGE GROVE, OR – Authorities have arrested a man in connection with the discovery of a deceased woman found on the sidewalk in front of 711 Highway 99 in Cottage Grove. The body was discovered at approximately 3:50 a.m. on March 28, 2025, prompting an immediate response from Cottage Grove Police. Upon arrival, officers determined the woman was deceased. Initially, her identity was withheld pending notification of next of kin. Based on information gathered independently, it was determined that the deceased had been staying at a local motel before her body was moved. Mark Michael Detering , (possibly related in some form) was arrested yesterday for allegedly removing her body from the motel after her death and abandoning it on the sidewalk where it was later discovered.
