Man Arrested for Sex Crimes Against Child



EUGENE, Ore. — A 23-year-old Eugene man, Reid Michael Squires, was arrested on July 22 for alleged sex crimes against a child under 12, following a collaborative effort by the Eugene Police Department (EPD) and Lane County Sheriff’s Office (LCSO).
The investigation began on July 18 when an EPD patrol officer received a report of the crimes. After the victim’s family confronted Squires, he fled his residence. A search warrant was issued, and a probable cause document was distributed to local agencies. 
An LCSO deputy later identified a man matching Squires’ description at an unhoused camp in Veneta. EPD’s Street Crimes Unit, Violent Crimes Unit, and LCSO deputies searched the area, locating Squires near a public pool in Veneta. He provided a false name but was safely taken into custody.
Squires was booked into Lane County Jail on charges of first-degree rape, first-degree sodomy, and first-degree sex abuse. Under Oregon's HB 3511, known as "Jessica's Law," these crimes against a child under 12 carry mandatory 25-year sentences for each applicable charge, including first-degree rape and sodomy. As a result, Squires could face 50 years or more in prison.
The case remains under investigation (Case 25-11496).

Man Arrested for Abuse of Corpse After Woman’s Body Found in Cottage Grove

COTTAGE GROVE, OR – Authorities have arrested a man in connection with the discovery of a deceased woman found on the sidewalk in front of 711 Highway 99 in Cottage Grove. The body was discovered at approximately 3:50 a.m. on March 28, 2025, prompting an immediate response from Cottage Grove Police. Upon arrival, officers determined the woman was deceased. Initially, her identity was withheld pending notification of next of kin. Based on information gathered independently, it was determined that the deceased had been staying at a local motel before her body was moved. Mark Michael Detering , (possibly related in some form) was arrested yesterday for allegedly removing her body from the motel after her death and abandoning it on the sidewalk where it was later discovered.
