UPDATE - 5/22/25

On May 21st morning, Lane County Sheriff’s detectives enlisted the Eugene Police Department to help find murder suspects last seen southeast of Oakridge days earlier. Using their new LPR (License Plate Reader) technology, EPD investigators swiftly located the suspects' vehicle and deployed resources, leading to the rapid apprehension of multiple suspects—a success credited to EPD's LPR technology.

OAKRIDGE, Ore. — Lane County Sheriff’s detectives uncovered a chilling scene southeast of Oakridge on May 20, finding a deceased adult male and a juvenile female, both victims of homicidal violence, following a tip.

By the next morning, authorities tracked down suspects in a dramatic operation. Eugene Police SWAT swooped in on a vehicle near 7th Avenue and Monroe Street, detaining multiple occupants. A third suspect was caught fleeing a residence on Irving Road.

A 16-year-old Eugene male faces charges of two counts of first-degree murder, second-degree abuse of a corpse, strangulation, and unlawful use of a firearm. A 15-year-old Eugene female was charged with first-degree murder and second-degree abuse of a corpse. Both were lodged at the Lane County Youth Services detention facility. Hunter Jesse Kip Barnett19, also from Eugene, was arrested and booked into Lane County Jail with two counts of second-degree abuse of a corpse, and now one count of first-degree murder.

With support from the FBI, Oregon State Police, and Eugene Police, the Sheriff’s Office believes all suspects are in custody, and the public faces no further danger. The adult male’s identity is withheld until family is notified. Anyone with details is urged to call 541-682-4141, referencing case #25-2382.

In Oregon, if a minor is charged with murder, they are charged as an adult and their name is likely to be released. This is because Oregon's law mandates that juveniles aged 15 and older, including those accused of murder, are tried as adults. Additionally, adult court proceedings are generally public, meaning the minor's name and other identifying information are likely to be made public unless a judge orders otherwise.
Elaboration:
  • Oregon's Measure 11 is a law that mandates adult prosecution for certain crimes, including murder, when committed by juveniles aged 15 and older.
  • Public Record:
Unlike juvenile court proceedings which are confidential, adult court proceedings are generally open to the public, including the media.
  • Minor's Name:
The minor's name and other identifying information are likely to be released to the public unless the court orders otherwise.
  • Exemptions:
There are exceptions to the public record rule, but they are not common.
