Protests in Eugene Lead to Arrests and Citations Amid Disorderly Conduct and Vandalism

Eugene, OR — Over two days, protests in Eugene escalated into confrontations with law enforcement, resulting in multiple arrests and citations for disorderly conduct, vandalism, and other charges, according to the Eugene Police Department (EPD).

On May 1, 2025, a planned protest began at 5:30 p.m. in the Park Blocks with speeches before participants marched toward Kesey Square. Organizers aimed for a peaceful demonstration, urging marchers to stay on the sidewalk. However, around 6:30 p.m., a splinter group disregarded these instructions, taking over all lanes of E. 11th Avenue and blocking traffic, including a Lane Transit District bus at Willamette Street and 10th Avenue. This disrupted the evening commute and prompted intervention from EPD’s Mobile Response Team (MRT). Despite warnings via public address systems, many in the splinter group refused to comply, slowing down deliberately as others left the march.

Officers arrested 38-year-old Katherine Marcella Tromp-Van Holst at E. 8th Avenue and E. Park Street for Disorderly Conduct after a crowd of about 20 protesters confronted police, yelling and cursing. During the arrest, 25-year-old Justice Ty Martinez of Springfield struck an MRT vehicle’s window and later spat on an officer, leading to his arrest for Aggravated Harassment (a felony) and Disorderly Conduct. Four others—37-year-old Conner Hoge Day, 23-year-old Sam Fialka Henry Janata, 23-year-old Cameron Alexandria Langley, and 27-year-old Bird Avery Margaret, were cited for Disorderly Conduct. All arrested individuals were lodged at Lane County Jail (Case 25-07013).

The following evening, on May 2, 2025, EPD monitored another event near the Campbell Community Center in Campbell Park after dark. At 9:07 p.m., MRT located 30 protesters dressed in black with face coverings marching southbound on High Street, blocking traffic. The group engaged in vandalism, spray-painting profanity on Eateries Bar at 5th Avenue and High Street, the Federal Building, where they also shone lasers at security cameras and tagged an anarchist symbol—and the Nike building at 590 Pearl Street. When the group noticed officers while moving northbound on Pearl Street from 6th Avenue, they attempted to flee.

MRT detained 35-year-old Eliza George Oswald of Eugene, a primary vandalism suspect, along with three others: 45-year-old Ian Matthes Moore of Eugene, 30-year-old Hailey Noel Kriens of Eugene, and 25-year-old Ella Emily Rohweder of Springfield. Oswald was charged with Disorderly Conduct and Criminal Mischief in the Second Degree, while the others were charged with Disorderly Conduct. All were lodged at Lane County Jail (Case 25-07065).

EPD’s response in both instances focused on ensuring public safety and minimizing disruptions, though tensions between protesters and law enforcement remain evident.
