Eugene Man Arrested for Arson After Dumpster Fire Damages Car Shop

EUGENE, Ore. — On May 11, 2025, Eugene Police and the Eugene Springfield Fire Department responded to a smoldering dumpster fire at the Sports Car Shop, located at 288 W 6th Avenue. The fire, found under the south overhang of the car repair shop, was extinguished by firefighters, and the ESFD fire marshal was called to investigate.

Surveillance footage captured a man at 5:27 a.m. walking east along W. 6th Alley, rummaging through the dumpster, and igniting cardboard inside before fleeing. The fire scorched the dumpster, left soot on the shop’s wall, and caused potential damage to electrical wiring, a fluorescent light, and heat damage to a black 2020 Land Rover EVOC parked nearby.

Later that day, at approximately 11:50 a.m., an officer spotted the suspect near W. 11th Avenue and Hayes Street. The individual, identified as 44-year-old Darren Martin Rasmussen, was arrested and transported to Lane County Jail, where he was charged with Arson in the Second Degree. The case is documented under number 25-07527.
