Seattle Man Arrested in Eugene Sting Operation Targeting Online Predators



EUGENE, Ore. — On May 9, 2025, at 3:39 p.m., 27-year-old Caleb Ogden from the Seattle area was arrested by Eugene Police Violent Crimes Unit detectives in a sting operation.

 Ogden had traveled to Eugene intending to meet a child under 16 he connected with online, only to encounter law enforcement instead. He was compliant during his arrest, and a search revealed a large quantity of sexual toys in his possession.

Ogden was booked into Lane County Jail on charges of Online Sexual Corruption of a Minor in the First Degree and Luring a Minor. The case, numbered 25-07427, highlights the ongoing efforts of local authorities to combat online predation.

To help protect children from similar dangers, the Eugene Police Department offers the following tips for parents and guardians:

  • Monitor Devices: Use remote monitoring tools to control and oversee your child’s device usage.
  • Track Communications: Stay informed about who your child is communicating with online.
  • Watch for Red Flags: Be cautious of unexplained absences, sudden behavioral changes, or new possessions like gifts or cash your child can’t account for.
  • Understand Anonymity Myths: Teach children that no one is truly anonymous online.
  • Engage with Apps: Familiarize yourself with your child’s games and apps by spending time using them together.
  • Create a Supervised Tech Space: Set up a designated area for children to use devices under parental supervision.
  • Limit Nighttime Device Use: Consider restricting phones or computers in bedrooms at night.
  • Handle Disclosures Appropriately: Learn proper protocols for addressing issues like sexting or sextortion, and assure your child they can confide in you or another trusted adult.
  • Encourage Blocking: Teach your child it’s okay to block users who make them uncomfortable.
  • Know Popular Platforms: Stay informed about apps like Snapchat, TikTok, Facebook, Google Hangouts, Instagram, and others.
For additional guidance, parents can access resources like the Federal Trade Commission’s “Protecting Kids Online”. Authorities urge vigilance to ensure children’s safety in an increasingly digital world.

Man Arrested for Abuse of Corpse After Woman’s Body Found in Cottage Grove

COTTAGE GROVE, OR – Authorities have arrested a man in connection with the discovery of a deceased woman found on the sidewalk in front of 711 Highway 99 in Cottage Grove. The body was discovered at approximately 3:50 a.m. on March 28, 2025, prompting an immediate response from Cottage Grove Police. Upon arrival, officers determined the woman was deceased. Initially, her identity was withheld pending notification of next of kin. Based on information gathered independently, it was determined that the deceased had been staying at a local motel before her body was moved. Mark Michael Detering , (possibly related in some form) was arrested yesterday for allegedly removing her body from the motel after her death and abandoning it on the sidewalk where it was later discovered. Victim and Suspect Names Released in Royal Ave. Murder Investigation

Eugene, Or. - At 3 a.m. on September 1, Eugene Police received reports of a loud dispute with shots fired outside a home near Royal Avenue and Ruskin Street. Units arrived to find a woman, Haley Leann Mackin , age 23, deceased with gunshot wounds.  Eugene Police Violent Crimes Unit identified Brandon Daniel Smith , age 24, as the suspect. Mackin and Smith had previously been in a relationship. Mackin was recently granted an order of protection against Smith.  Smith was taken into custody by EPD at 5:05 a.m. at  4th Avenue and Pearl Street . Eugene Police thanks Springfield Police and Lane County Sheriff’s Office for their assistance during the apprehension. Smith had plead guilty to, and been convicted of, assault in the forth degree misdemeanor DV against Mackin earlier this year on 04/10/2024. Case # 24CR11412.
