Darren Lee Woods Sentenced to Prison for 2021 Lane County Shooting
LANE COUNTY, OR. -- On April 3, 2025, Darren Lee Woods, a 59-year-old man from Eugene, Oregon, was transferred to Coffee Creek Correctional Facility for intake following his sentencing in Lane County Circuit Court.
Woods, convicted of Assault in the First Degree under case number 21CR19240, will serve a mandatory sentence under Oregon’s Measure 11, requiring him to complete every day of his term, minus time already served in county jail. His uncalculated release date is listed as September 28, 2032. Woods was also convicted of Unlawful Use of a Weapon, and Felon in Possession of a Firearm. The charge of Criminal Mischief in the First Degree was dismissed, and Woods was acquitted of Failure to Preform the Duty of a Driver - Property Damage. After intake at Coffee Creek, he will be transferred to an all-male Oregon state prison to serve the remainder of his sentence.
The case stems from a violent incident on April 16, 2021, when the Lane County Sheriff’s Office received multiple reports of gunshots in the 29000 block of Kelso Street, Eugene, around 10:05 p.m. Responding deputies, assisted by Oregon State Police and Eugene Police, found a 56-year-old male victim with gunshot wounds. The victim, who survived and stabilized after hospital treatment, was targeted in what authorities described as an ongoing feud with Woods. The suspect, then 55, fled the scene before law enforcement arrived, driving a white 1998 Dodge 1500 with Oregon license plate 125MEA—a lifted, sporty truck with chrome wheels and a distinctive sticker across the back window. Woods was also linked to a white 1985 Pace Arrow motorhome with Oregon plate MH10375. Authorities warned he was armed and dangerous, as the firearm used in the shooting remained unrecovered.
Woods evaded capture for weeks until his arrest on May 6, 2021, in Lassen County, California. He was extradited to Lane County Jail later that month and released on bail pending trial. However, his compliance with the legal process faltered. After posting bail in August 2022, Woods failed to keep his court-ordered ankle monitor charged around May 15, 2023, and was believed to have removed it entirely. The Lane County Sheriff’s Office issued a public call for tips on his whereabouts on May 19, 2023. The next day, Woods turned himself in, only to be released again on bail on May 27, 2023. His freedom was short-lived; he was arrested again on October 17, 2023, and released on pretrial supervision with electronic monitoring three days later. On November 15, 2024, Woods’ release agreement was revoked, his security forfeited, and a warrant issued for his arrest after further noncompliance.
Woods’ final arrest occurred in Philomath, Oregon, by Philomath Police, though the exact date remains unclear. Initially held in Benton County Jail, he was transferred to Lane County Jail on December 1, 2024, where he remained until his conviction and sentencing on March 28, 2025, for the 2021 shooting. Additional charges from his Benton County arrest, filed under case number 25CR00103, are still pending in Benton County Circuit Court.
Woods, described as a white male, 5’11”, 165 pounds, with grey hair and green eyes, now faces over seven years in prison for the Lane County assault. His journey through the legal system, marked by repeated releases and violations, culminated in today’s transfer to state custody, closing a chapter on a case that began nearly four years ago.
