High-Speed Crash Leaves Child Severely Injured, DUII Suspect Arrested
MARCOLA, Ore. — A high-speed crash at the intersection of Marcola Road and Hill Road on April 16 at approximately 8:30 p.m. left one child severely injured and four others hospitalized, according to the Lane County Sheriff’s Office.
The incident, which involved multiple vehicles, was caused by a maroon 2007 Toyota Highlander that ran a stop sign while traveling east on Hill Road, colliding with a white 2010 Dodge Caravan. The Highlander then struck a parked vehicle on Sunderman Road.
The driver of the Highlander, identified as 28-year-old Gabriel Michael Drummond of Eugene, fled the scene but was apprehended about 90 minutes later near Hill Road and McKenzie View Drive with assistance from deputies, K9 Hektor, the Sheriff’s Drone Team, and local residents. Drummond was arrested and charged with DUII, reckless driving, five counts of third-degree assault, and felony hit-and-run. He was evaluated at a hospital before being booked into Lane County Jail.
The Caravan’s driver and four child passengers were transported to a hospital, with one child sustaining severe injuries. The Lane County Sheriff’s Crash Reconstruction Unit is investigating, and the incident strained sheriff’s resources, limiting responses to other calls for hours.
The Sheriff’s Office expressed gratitude to the Mohawk Valley Rural Fire District, area residents, and the Lane County District Attorney’s Office for their support
