Man Convicted of Kidnapping in 2022 Carjacking Sentenced to Nearly 6 Years

EUGENE, Ore. – Donald Wayne Johnson, who tried to carjack an occupied vehicle from a rest area south of Eugene in 2022, was found guilty on March 13, 2025, of second-degree kidnapping, unlawful use of a motor vehicle, and fourth-degree assault, court records show. The charges stem from an incident at the Gettings Creek Rest Area near Saginaw in September 2022.

Following a one-day bench trial, Johnson, who was on probation for prior Benton County convictions—including aggravated harassment, first-degree criminal mischief, and driving under the influence—was sentenced on April 4, 2025, to 5 years and 10 months in prison for the kidnapping charge alone. As an Oregon Measure 11 crime, he must serve the full sentence without early release. However, his time in Lane County Jail since September 20, 2022, will be credited as time served toward the 5-year, 10-month sentence.

On April 8, 2025, Johnson was transferred from Lane County Jail to Coffee Creek Correctional Facility in Wilsonville for intake before being moved to an all-male Oregon prison to serve the remainder of his term. Court and jail records provided details of the case.
