EUGENE, Ore. — A 43-year-old man was arrested early Tuesday morning after threatening a 7-Eleven employee with a knife and stealing a lighter, police said. The incident occurred at 3:11 a.m. on April 1 at the convenience store located at 1107 S. Bertelsen Road, while Eugene Police officers were already stretched thin responding to an unrelated armed suicidal subject call across town.
Despite limited staffing, officers quickly responded to reports of a man acting disorderly with a knife. Upon arrival, they identified the suspect, Matthew Anthony Marks, sitting outside the store. According to police, Marks had entered the 7-Eleven, asked an employee about a lighter, and walked out with it without paying. When the employee confronted him, Marks allegedly threatened to kill them and brandished a knife.
Officers maintained a safe distance due to the weapon, issuing commands and informing Marks he was under arrest. Marks reportedly covered himself with a blanket, prompting additional officers to arrive with less-lethal options. After repeated warnings and an unsuccessful attempt to deploy these tools, a team of officers moved in, removed the blanket, and subdued Marks following a brief struggle. He was found holding the knife at the time of his arrest.
Marks was booked into Lane County Jail on charges of Robbery in the First Degree, Unlawful Use of a Weapon, Resisting Arrest, and Disorderly Conduct. The case is logged under incident number 25-05148.
