Springfield Duo Charged with Widespread Mail Theft
SPRINGFIELD, OR — A late-night confrontation over stolen mail led to the arrest of two suspects, Brandon Weltch and Stephanie Wilson, who now face charges linked to at least 60 victims in a Springfield neighborhood, according to the Springfield Police Department.
The incident began in the early hours of March 25, 2025, when a resident in the 600 block of West N Street spotted two masked individuals—a man and a woman—stealing mail from a mailbox. The resident challenged the male suspect, later identified as Weltch, and successfully retrieved the stolen mail. Police were called and soon intercepted Weltch and Wilson as they walked away from the scene. Officers found evidence of mail theft on Weltch, who was already on parole for a prior mail theft conviction. He was promptly taken into custody for a parole violation.
Wilson, meanwhile, was pulling a wagon containing several closed bags. She refused to let officers search the bags, prompting police to seize the wagon and its contents while preparing an affidavit for a search warrant. At that point, lacking direct evidence of her involvement in the theft, Wilson was allowed to leave. However, the investigation was far from over. As police canvassed the area, additional residents reported tampered mailboxes, including a cluster mailbox that appeared to have been pried open.
On April 7, after securing a signed search warrant, officers searched the seized bags and wagon, uncovering evidence of mail theft affecting at least 60 named victims, most of whom lived in the neighborhood where Weltch and Wilson were initially stopped. The findings led to Weltch being charged with 60+ counts of mail theft. Later that same day, police located and arrested Wilson, charging her with 60 counts of mail theft.
The Springfield Police Department continues to investigate the extent of the thefts, urging residents to report any suspicious activity or additional mailbox tampering in the area.
