Husband Arrested Again in Eugene Animal Neglect Case as Wife Remains at Large
EUGENE, Ore. – A Eugene couple, previously charged in connection with the death of a dog left in a hot car, has faced multiple arrests and outstanding warrants related to the case.
Joshua Makii McFarland, 46, and Shayla Rose McFarland, 43, were initially arrested on January 12, 2025, following an incident dating back to June 23, 2024. Eugene Police responded to the Navigation Center on River Avenue around 5 a.m. that day after reports of a deceased dog inside a vehicle.
Another dog, an older Labrador, was also found in the car. Authorities determined the dogs had been left in the hot vehicle for an extended period, resulting in the death of one of them.
At the time of the incident, the McFarlands were staying at the Navigation Center. They were charged with Animal Neglect in the First Degree and Animal Neglect in the Second Degree, while Joshua McFarland faced an additional charge of Possession of Methamphetamine. The couple was released under Pretrial Services on January 13, 2025. However, after failing to appear for scheduled court proceedings, warrants for their arrest were issued in February 2025
.
On March 14, 2025, both Joshua and Shayla McFarland were taken into custody on these outstanding warrants and held in the Lane County Jail. They were released again at some point thereafter, but their legal troubles continued.
On March 28, 2025, bench warrants were issued for both Joshua and Shayla McFarland after they once again failed to appear in court.
Most recently, on April 8, 2025, Joshua McFarland was arrested again, this time on the bench warrant issued on March 28, 2025. He is currently in custody. Shayla McFarland, however, remains at large, with her bench warrant still outstanding as of April 8, 2025.
The case remains under investigation.
