Sheriff’s K9 Tracks Down Suspect in Cottage Grove Assault

COTTAGE GROVE, Ore. — A 29-year-old Cottage Grove man, Devin Derry Morgan, was arrested late Saturday night after a physical altercation on Rachel Road left a victim hospitalized. Lane County Sheriff’s deputies responded around 10:20 p.m. to reports of a dispute in the 32100 block, south of Cottage Grove.

Deputies learned Morgan had fled along nearby railroad tracks. After developing probable cause for strangulation and fourth-degree assault, authorities set up a perimeter with help from Springfield Police, Cottage Grove Police, and Oregon State Police. K9 Tito, guided by his handler, tracked Morgan to a hiding spot under a tree several hundred yards away, where he was found injured from his escape attempt.

Morgan was treated at a hospital before being booked into Lane County Jail on charges of strangulation and assault. The victim also received medical care. A Springfield Police drone aided the search effort.

The Sheriff’s Office credited community donations for supporting its K9 Unit, which funded Tito’s purchase and care. More information on the program is available here.
